The brief

The Intellectual Property Department at MMAKS Advocates ran on procedures that had grown around spreadsheets, email and institutional memory. iPMentis version 1 was commissioned to take those procedures and turn them into a single, dependable system. It took eight months, built from scratch.

What we built

  • A ground-up system covering the department's core procedures.
  • Structured records for IP matters, from filing through to billing.
  • A workflow that matches how the department actually works.
  • A foundation designed to be extended as the practice grows.

How it works

This was a full custom build rather than a configuration of an off-the-shelf product. We mapped the department's procedures first, then designed the data model and workflows around them. The result is a system that reflects the firm's practice instead of forcing the practice to change.

Outcome

iPMentis replaced a set of manual, disconnected processes with one system for the IP department. It is a long-running example of our preference for hand-built software where a generic tool would only move the problem around.
