The brief

Quiz Time School Challenge needed a scoring system that could be operated live, read clearly on camera, and trusted by everyone in the room. We built the first computerized school debate scoreboard in the country for the show.

What we built

  • An electronically controlled scoreboard operated live during filming.
  • Output to televisions and displays for the studio and audience.
  • An Android interface option for controlling the system.
  • A build customized specifically for the Quiz Time format.

How it works

This was a hardware-and-software project: the scoreboard is controlled electronically and drives external displays, with an Android device able to interface with the system. On a live set, the important qualities are instant response and zero ambiguity, so the design removed anything that could slow an operator down.

Outcome

The system aired on Ugandan television, including Urban TV, and gave the show a scoring display that could be read on camera. It is no longer in service.
